CHAPTER EIGHT

By the time she finished her walk with Cicero, Olivia had returned with the food, and she said her goodbyes to Samuel, who promised to let her know if the background checks turned up anything interesting. It had been nice, walking and chatting with him, even though he wasn’t really there.

She set up Cicero’s outdoor cage and brought some paper plates outside so she and Olivia could eat together on the picnic table. The pad Thai was delicious, and she snapped a couple of pictures of their meal for her blog. When they were done, they decided to retire for the evening. Neither of them was in the mood to have another campfire. There was something celebratory about having a fire, and tonight wasn’t a night for celebration.

Tulia spent the rest of the evening in her RV with Cicero, working on her blog post and streaming a show on her laptop. Despite—or maybe because of—the long video call with Samuel earlier, she felt unusually lonely tonight and went to bed as soon as it got dark out, hoping tomorrow would be better. The zoo visit felt like it had been a lifetime ago.

Since Olivia still wanted to take the last half of the week off and they hadn’t accomplished everything they’d hoped to accomplish yesterday, they had even more to get done the next day. Tulia woke up bright and early and went through her morning routine. By the time she gave Cicero his breakfast and secured his cage, she could see Olivia through her RV’s window, packing her camera equipment into the sedan.

Tulia wasn’t sure what exactly they would end up doing today, so she brought her usual small backpack which included her water bottle, snacks, and a few other must-haves like tissues and a lightweight dress she could put on if she needed a change of clothes. She knew they would probably be gone for a few hours, so she left the radio on for Cicero again before she locked up. She felt some trepidation about leaving him here alone after what happened to Laura, but her RV had top-notch security. If someone broke in, she would know. Besides, it was far too hot to leave Cicero in the car for even a couple of minutes, which would severely limit them on what they could do today.

While they were organizing the sedan, she heard voices coming from Daniel’s campsite and found herself growing more and more curious about what was going on. She was planning on peering around Olivia’s van to see if he had guests or if he had left at some point during the night and new campers had taken his spot, but before she got the chance, her question was answered for her when a uniformed detective walked across the green space between the two sites and greeted her and Olivia with a polite, “Hope I’m not interrupting. You two have a minute to chat?”

“What’s going on?” Tulia asked as Olivia shut the trunk. The younger woman came to stand next to her.
